Rebirth of Eden – Unreal Fellowship Worldbuilding
Exploring new visual languages in real-time digital world creation
Rebirth of Eden is a short film developed during the intensive Unreal Fellowship: Worldbuilding 2022 EMEA, an Epic Games initiative focused on building narrative environments for film and video games. Fully rendered in real time using Unreal Engine 5.1, this piece demonstrates the power of next-generation tools to design richly detailed, emotionally resonant virtual spaces.
A world built from an unpredictable creative prompt
As part of the challenge, each participant had to create a digital environment based on a randomly generated mix of concepts. In this case: baroque architecture, jungle, science fiction, post-apocalyptic, and realistic aesthetic. These keywords were used to develop an initial concept board, followed by hand sketches and a blockout phase to establish the massing and overall layout.
From this base, architectural complexity, dense vegetation and symbolic atmospheres were layered into the scene. While Megascans allowed the easy integration of high-quality scanned assets, the core of the work was in spatial composition, visual storytelling, and the careful construction of a coherent and immersive setting.
Technology empowering visual narrative
Key technologies like Nanite, Virtual Textures, and especially Lumen made it possible to work with unprecedented geometric and lighting complexity. Lumen enabled real-time lighting adjustments, allowing fast fine-tuning of tones, intensities, and shadow behavior — eliminating the need for baking or long render times, and streamlining the artistic process.
The result is a real-time experience with over a million vegetation elements, scenes rendering more than one billion triangles, and numerous real-world 3D scans that add realism and depth to the environment.
Global collaboration and evocative soundscape
Rebirth of Eden was enriched by the contributions of a global community of 3D artists who generously shared scanned models of historical architecture, statues, lighting fixtures, and decorative elements.
The film is accompanied by the track Gran Capitán por Renombre, performed by the Coro Ciudad de la Alhambra and the Ensemble Elyma, adding a mystical, solemn tone that enhances the overall experience.
